Abstract

Laboratory tests were conducted to acquire the antibiotic effect of white and naturally-colored cotton varieties/lines, AP2, PM1 and PM4 compared to the control, SR60, using fresh leaves fed to the 3rd instar Helicoverpa armigera larvae. There were no significant differences found in the developmental times and weights of the bollworm larvae and pupae fed on the leaves of the different cotton varieties/ lines except for the percentage of adult abnormalities in PM1and PM4. The leaf damage by the leafhoppers was undertaken in a greenhouse using adult and nymph leafhoppers released in a screen cage containing one month-old cotton plants of each variety/line grown in pots. After 14 days, the results revealed that AP2 had the lowest score for hopperburn rating (3.5). Cotton variety trials in sprayed and unsprayed plots were conducted during 2006 and 2007 at two locations, the Field Crop Research Center at Nakhon Ratchasima and a farmer’s field at Thongpapoom, Kanchanaburi. The mean annual number of key pests and the annual yield of each variety/line at each location were compared and the average agronomic performance of each variety/ line was HVI analyzed. At Nakhon Ratchasima, leafhoppers were more abundant than aphids and whiteflies in both 2006 and 2007. There was a significant difference in the mean leafhopper numbers for AP2 and PM4 between both plots during the two years, while for PM1 there was a significant difference in 2007 only. Seed weights of SR60 and PM1 differed between the sprayed and unsprayed plots in 2006. At Tongpapoom, Kanchanaburi, both SR60 and PM4 in 2006, and PM4 again in 2007 had significantly different amounts of leafhopper between the sprayed and unsprayed plots. The yield of SR60 in the sprayed plot significantly differed from the unsprayed plots in 2006. Agronomic performance of each cotton fiber found only micronaire range in PM1 from Thongpapoom and the fiber lengths of SR60, AP2 and PM1 grown at Nakhon Ratchasima to be designated as premium. At Tongpapoom, the AP2 fiber length fell in the base range. The percent lint of AP2 was the highest at Nakhon Ratchasima, while PM4 had the lowest value for this parameter at both locations.

Abstract

The backcross method was used to transfer traits of resistance with regard to some cotton insects and the good fiber qualities of Salid 1 (SD1) and 413, the recurrent parents, respectively, to naturally colored cotton varieties, the non recurrent parents, (Green, Dark Green, Brown and Red Brick). The experiment was conducted at Suwan Farm, Nakhon Ratchasima from 2002 to 2006. Both the parent types and backcross progenies (SD1green, SD1dark green, SD1brown and SD1red brick) obtained were compared in terms of yield, fiber qualities and hopperburn rate during 2006 to 2008. The results indicated that in 2006, all backcrosses gave significantly lower seed cotton yields than those of their recurrent and non recurrent parents, except SD1green and SD1brown. In 2007, only SD1 red brick had a significantly higher yield than that of its non recurrent parent, Red Brick. There were no significant differences in terms of 2008 agronomic performance among all parents and the backcrosses. The high volume instrument (HVI) average results showed that all backcrosses, except SD1 413, had the fiber length determined as short. Fiber strength (g/tex) of each backcross also expressed better results than that of its recurrent parents. Only SD1 redbrick showed improved fiber elongation compared with its non recurrent parent, though it was only slight. The naturally colored cotton varieties, Brown and Dark Green, were significantly lower than their progenies, SD1brown and SD1 dark green, in terms of leafhopper numbers, during the years 2006 and 2007, respectively. In 2006, all backcrosses had a hopperburn rating slightly better than that of both their parents. The 2007 ratings of most backcross progenies were equal to the parents, except for SD1 green and SD1 brown, which were better.

Abstract

Feasibility study of growing naturally colored cotton, Gossypium hirsutum, PM1and PM4 and Gossypium arboreum, PM2 along with white cotton, G.arboreum, PM3 comparing with the standard white G.hirsutum, SR60 was conducted from 2003-2004 at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center, Pak Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima. RCB was used with 4 replicates, each with 5 rows of each variety. Data of insects were biweekly collected in the three middle rows for four consecutive times. In both years, the kinds and mean numbers of key pest were mainly leafhopper, Amrasca biguttula, and the plant bug, Megacoelum biseratense while the bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera was found in 2004 only. The 2003 and 2004 similar results revealed that the leafhoppers on PM1 and SR60 and those on PM2 and PM3 were not significantly different while all were significantly different from PM4. The average amounts of plant bug on every variety in both years were also found not to be significantly different from one another. Comparing the numbers of leafhopper between 2003 and 2004, they were significantly different at all varieties except PM2, while those of the plant bug on every variety did not significantly differ. As for the fiber analysis and % gin turn out, PM1 was found to have the acceptable qualities compared with the standard ranges of fiber determination as well as the commercial variety, SR 60.
